Stephen A. Green, M.D., M.A. is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University, and has a private psychiatric practice in Washington, D.C. After completing Harvard College he received his M.D. degree from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, then completed a medical internship at the Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, MA, and a residency in psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center, Boston, MA. He received a Masters Degree in Philosophy and Bioethics from Georgetown University's Kennedy Institute of Ethics.
After serving two years as a staff psychiatrist at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, he joined the faculty of the School of Medicine at Georgetown University, where he has taught medical students and residents at every level of training, and was a recipient of the Golden Apple Award for medical student teaching and the Louis F. Rittelmeyer, Jr. Teacher of the Year Award for teaching psychiatric residents.
Dr. Green was Associate Director of the Consultation Service of the American Psychiatric Association, Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Washington Psychiatric Society, and is currently a member of the Ethics Committee of the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Green has published articles on psychotherapy, psychosomatic issues, and the ethics of managed care. He has written two books about the interrelationship of physical and mental illness, and edited three others, including the most recent edition of Psychiatric Ethics, published by Oxford University Press. An Anthology of Psychiatric Ethics, co-edited with Dr. Sidney Bloch, is scheduled for publication by Oxford University Press in April, 2006. He has written for standard textbooks, including the chapter on medical psychotherapy for each edition of Psychiatric Care of the Medical Patient, published by Oxford University Press, and scientific articles for such journals as the American Journal of Psychiatry, British Journal of Psychiatry and Pharos. He is a referee for several journals, including The American Journal of Psychiatry, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, Psychosomatics, Academic Psychiatry and General Hospital Psychiatry
