Peter Bartlett

Peter Bartlett is Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Professor of Mental Health Law in the School of Law at the University of Nottingham. Prior to his academic career in England, was a lawyer in Ontario with a particular interest in mental health law and patient advocacy. He is author of The Poor Law of Lunacy: The Administration of Pauper Lunatics in Nineteenth-Century England (1999), Blackstone’s Guide to the Capacity Act 2005 (2005), and Mental Health Law: Policy and Practice (with R Sandland, 2nd ed, 2003). He is co-editor (with D Wright) of Outside the Walls of the Asylum: The History of Care in the Community 1750-2000 (1999). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Academy of Law and Mental Health, and of the Mental Disability Advocacy Centre, an organisation based in Budapest pressing for human rights for people with mental disabilities in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
