Michael Bay

Michael Bay JD, Associate Professor (PT), Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, McMaster University, Canada.

Called to the Bar in 1984, Michael is an educator and lecturer in the fields of mental health, consent and capacity and health privacy law as well as the history and impact of the Indian Residential Schools. Michael has served as founding Chair of Ontario's Consent and Capacity Board, Director of the province's Mental Health Law Education Project, consultant to the Ministry of Health, Chair of the Psychiatric Review Board (Toronto West), mental health counsel to the Ministry of Health, and Executive Assistant to the Minister of Health. He was engaged to review community treatment order legislation on behalf of the Ontario government.

Michael is an associate professor (PT) in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at McMaster University and adjunct professor of nursing at the University of Toronto. He spent a decade adjudicating cases of alleged sexual and physical abuse of former students of the Indian Residential Schools. He also serves as a Deputy Judge of the Ontario Small Claims Court.

Michael has received both the SOAR Medal from the Ontario Society of Adjudicators and Regulators for outstanding service to the administrative justice system of Ontario and the TA Sweet Award from the Ontario Psychiatric Association in recognition of having made a major contribution to the understanding of mental illness and its impact on individuals in society. Michael is widely published and has addressed hundreds of audiences of physicians, allied health professionals, police, other professionals, consumers, families and members of the wider community across Canada and overseas.
