Louis C. Charland, Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario, Canada, where he also holds a cross-appointment in Psychiatry and a joint-appointment in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Professor Charland's areas of specialization are the philosophy of emotion and the philosophy of psychiatry. In March 2003, Charland was awarded a Visiting Member Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, to conduct research on decision-making capacity and personal responsibility in depression. He is currently working on a book that explores 19th century developments in the psychopathology of affectivity entitled, Moral Treatment and the Passions.
