Dr. Julian C Hughes first read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford, but then studied Medicine at the University of Bristol. During his higher training as an Old Age Psychiatrist in Oxford, he wrote his PhD thesis at the University of Warwick on Wittgenstein and Dementia. Prior to taking up his present post in North Tyneside General Hospital, he was a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry at Newcastle General Hospital for five years. His present post, in addition to his clinical work in Old Age Psychiatry, also includes time for research, as an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, at the Institute for Ageing in the University of Newcastle. He continues to be active in research relating to dementia and the philosophy of psychiatry. He sits on a local Clinical Ethics Committee and will be Chairing the Ethics Committee of a recently formed UK research network for dementia and neurodegenerative diseases. He currently chairs the Philosophy Special Interest Group of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
